I’ve been pretty deep in Resident Evil 7 lately (check my write up) so I wanted something lighter for this week’s Netflix Pick. Oddly enough that led me to Santa Clarita Diet.
Sheila (Drew Barrymore) and Joel (Timothy Olyphant) Hammond are a successful married Real Estate Agent team. After an incredibly disgusting incident involving buckets of vomit and some meatball sized reddish thing being puked up out of Sheila’s body, she became something like a zombie. Sheila is fully functional, in a lot of ways is even more functional, which is great. The only downsize is she has an incurable hunger for human flesh.
Making it a family endeavor Joel and Sheila take on a Dexter like code to find people who deserve to die so she can feed. Unlike Dexter, the two bumble their way through every outing and can’t escape the fact that they are decent and average suburban people.
The Hammond’s daughter Abby (Liv Hewson) knows what’s going on with her mother but the Hammond’s insist on keeping this ‘normal’ and try to hide what they do. Abby has her own story going on with the uncomfortable kid next door, Eric (Skyler Gisondo).
A show about zombies and/or cannibalism doesn’t sound like it’d be funny, but the tone and rapid fire lies of the characters make a great combination over the peculiar story line. The sunny setting of an upscale suburban neighborhood make everything feel light and fun.
Timothy Olyphant is one of the best elements of the show. Known mostly for being a hardass and a tough guy Olyphant takes on more of a squeamish role in Santa Clarita Diet. He is there for his wife but has a much harder time taking on their new roles as killers. He gets in deep and stresses every last little thing.
Santa Clarita Diet is every bit the sitcom. It has a slew of familiar funny faces and some great cameos. The tone is hilarious and the light aspect of the show vs the morbid storyline along with the sexual tension and R rating make a great combination. At just shy of 30 minutes an episode it’s a quick watch as well. If you still aren’t sold on giving this show a shot, Nathan Fillion is in it.
