So Wizard Podcast goes to ComiCONN “A Show for the Fans by the Fans” 2017

The comic book convention season is upon us again, and one of my favorite shows in the area is ComiCONN “A Show for the Fans by the Fans!”. This is the first year that the show is being held at the large Foxwoods Resort Casino, and the So Wizard Podcast actually got to meet up in person (a rarity for us) and check it out.

Markellus, Joey, and Aubrey

I’m not normally a person that gets drawn out to casinos, but I have enjoyed a concert at Foxwoods Resort Casino before, I knew the interior was going to be a nice place to walk around if I wanted to move about. Plus all those great restaurants (I see you Fuddruckers)….

Now, Joey and I were the first of our crew to arrive on the scene. We started at the entrance and looped around the establishment, meeting up with the “Official website master/Netflix reviewer” of the So Wizard Podcast, Adam WallyHawk, his lovely wife Jackie, and their family. Something that I really appreciated from the show being located inside the Foxwoods Resort Casino, is that the area was carpeted. That is a fantastic thing to have when you’re going to be walking around for hours.

One of first things that we noticed upon moving around the different areas of the con, was what I can only describe as a personal dream come true. I’m a HUGE fan of the 60’s animated show Speed Racer, and right there on the floor, was a full-sized Mach 5 car available for a photo ops. Needless to say, this was a highlight of the convention and possibly my whole summer.

Other great photo opportunities were also available, and a decent amount were designed to help raise money for charities. When the lovely Aubrey arrived to the show, and the entire podcast team was assembled, we took a photo inside the “Stranger Things” living room set. Being a big fan of the show, this definitely was a thrill for us.

There were a decent amount of impressive cosplayers sprinkled throughout the showroom. Wonder Women, Stormtroopers, Batmen, and a shockingly height accurate Chewbacca were great to see walking around in there (I even saw a guy dressed as “Speed Racer”)

The events there contained interesting panels to check out, including a very geek friendly time from “The Angry Geeks Show” ( and a fascinating discussion about the Star Wars franchise from author Timothy Zahn. It was great to hear original stories from someone who’s actually spent some time inside the Lucasfilm walls. There was also a nice variety of celebrities from TV, movies, and the comic industry. Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin from the hit show Stranger Things) seemed very excited to get to mingle with con-goers.

It was very nice to see the large amount of independent comic book creators, which is something that I personally like to look for at shows. I picked up a few cool books from indie artist/Hip Hop Emcee, Adam Wallenta ( ) and from the publisher Wayward Raven, who along with producing books in multiple genres, also brewed their own beer. Very funny guys ( It was also cool to get some artwork and meet the young men behind the “Smooth” comic. They will be going places. (

We finished the night at the after party where DJ Darth Fader ( was on the decks spinning a very nice array of jams to keep the crowd on the floor. When “The Cupid Shuffle” dropped, I had to get out there move with the crowd. It was only later on, during the recording of the show, did I learn because of my dark clothes and the big yellow star on my shirt, apparently I looked like a large can of Rockstar energy drink.

All in all, this continues to be a fun comic convention in the Connecticut area. Not a cattle drive where you can barely move, or an uneventful show where it’s cosplayers just sitting around looking at their phones. A show that really has something for everyone, and gives them plenty of room to come and enjoy it.
