Triple 9
Director
John Hillcoat
Cast
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson
Also starring Anthony Mackie, Kate Winslet, Norman Reedus, Clifton Collins Jr., Aaron Paul, and Gal Gadot. This is just a really solid, cops and crooks story that is mesmerizing and reminiscent of “Heat”. This is easily the most suspenseful movie of its kind since “The Departed”.
The story is about a group of bank robbers who are being blackmailed by the Russian mob to pull off these elaborate heists. The kicker here is that some of these criminals are also dirty cops.
That intriguing layer to these characters turns this from being just a heist movie, to simultaneously becoming an engrossing detective movie. There’s no real black and white here, everything is pretty much grey. When a new officer joins the ranks, he thinks he’s doing the right thing by following protocol and doing his job. Eventually he’s going to become a pawn in an elaborate plan by these criminals to get that one last score.
Everyone in the cast is fantastic, and I mean everyone! The direction and storytelling is intense and thrilling. With twists and turns throughout, this is what going to the movies should be about. I loved this flick!
