“Passengers” is a Sci-Fi drama/adventure about a spaceship that’s carrying 5000 people to a new planet that they will inhabit and make into a new home. The trip to this brave new world takes 100 or so years to get there, so the passengers are all put in cryo sleep until they are close to arriving on the planet. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence play two of the passengers that are woken up from their sleep, about 90 years too early.  He’s an engineer travelling third class, she’s a prominent writer traveling first class.
Watching the trailer for this movie, I felt like I may have already seen this movie before, but I was glad that everything was not spoiled from the previews. There’s a few very welcome twists and turns that I really enjoyed. The movie tests your ability to still like these characters, even after you’ve seen them perform some morally questionable behavior.
The acting was really good, (especially from J. Law) which is great because there isn’t a large cast to fall back on. It’s really just three actors. The directing, the special effects, are also pretty solid.
The biggest issue that I can see people having with the story is the ending. It may rub some people the wrong way, but I didn’t have a problem with it. I think I can understand why it’s there.
I enjoyed “Passengers” a lot more than I thought I would. After this, “Headhunters” and “The Imitation Game”, director Morten Tyldun is definitely making a name for himself.
