Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

Mission Impossible 5

Ethan Hunt is back in action. In this 5th installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise proves once again that he is a true fan of filmmakers as he let’s the talented Christopher McQuarrie take the reigns of the spy thriller. The results are fantastic as McQuarrie brings back some of the twisty dramatic intrigue of the first movie.

In this adventure, the IMF team is once again operating on their own (which somehow seems to happen in every movie) and this time they’re going up against a evil group of international agents called.”The Syndicate” that are intent on causing destruction worldwide. The government thinks the IMF are somehow responsible, so the team must work in the shadows to bring down this agency and prove their innocence.

While not being as “non stop action” as the 3rd chapter and being a little more grittier that the 4th chapter, this may be the most suspenseful Mission yet. The action set pieces are balanced with these “Impossible” missions that the team must accomplish in order to get closer to the main bad guy.

Tom Cruise is back to playing the cool character of “Tom Cruise” but it’s difficult to not root for this guy when he’s literally hanging off the side of a ascending airplane for our entertainment. Ving Rhames is still solid as Luther. Jeremy Renner gets in some good scenes too. Simon Pegg is just been an excellent addition to this team, he’s a great character to root for. The real star of this film though is Rebecca Ferguson. She’s like a British version of Ethan Hunt, but who’s allegiance is difficult to pinpoint. A fantastic character, and I’m sure it won’t be long before someone starts asking for a spin off vehicle for her. She should at least make it back for the next movie.

A solid “cat and mouse” spy adventure, and proof that this franchise is one the most entertaining ones we have going now.
