I’m not exactly sure why I keep subjecting myself to this franchise. Most likely because I keep thinking that I’ll be pleasantly surprised, but this sequel fails in almost the exact same way the last version did. They consists of scenes that are needed to continue the story, but they don’t come together to create a solid film. It feels like a cinematic version of a book, but not necessarily a “movie”.
There were a couple things here that did surprise me, mainly Miles Teller. He’s admitted that he’s only in this Divergent franchise for the money. His “Peter” character is exactly the same as he was in the last two movies, but Teller is clearly enjoying being the wise ass and pointing out some of the ridiculousness of their situations. He’s good at being that smug jerk. I also really enjoyed the subtle touch of having our female hero slowly start to resemble the female villain of the first two entries.
This is a movie that has some interesting sci-fi ideas, just not engaging characters or an exciting story structure to raise it above a pre-teen mediocre adventure. I will most likely wind up watching the next in the series just to see what happens with Peter, but unless you’re a HUGE fan of the books, or really LOVED the last two entries, you may be disappointed here.
