Gods of Egypt

Director
Alex Proyas
Cast
Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
I can’t really understand the logic of making yet another Egyptian/God’s and Mortal fantasy story after there seems to have been so many, but here we go again.
Here’s a movie where they take the stylized characterizations of ancient Egypt and try to make a cool comic book type of movie. The story elements are there, but the script feels so lazy that I honestly didn’t care what was happening or why it was happening. Please, just show me something interesting!
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars as a young god, Horus who’s about to become King of Egypt, but during the ceremony he’s beaten, almost to death by his uncle Set, played by Gerard Butler (going a little over the top), who then just takes over the throne.
During the self appointed King’s reign, a pair of Star crossed lovers are torn apart, and when one of them is murdered, the other must convince the fallen king to take arms and take his kingdom back.
One of the fascinating things about this movie is how the special effects went from being horrendous, to kind of cool, to back to awful. There was one cool aspect of the story involving the Villain that I won’t divulge here, but hardly enough to make up for the rest. As much as I loved The Crow, and respect Alex Proyas, this is a misstep.
Just wait to catch it on tv during lazy Saturday afternoon.
Also points off for casting future Black Panther Chadwick Boseman as an Egyptian God with the personality of C-3P0.
What were these producers smoking?
