Movie Review – Green Room

Director:
Jeremy Saulnier
Cast:
Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Patrick Stewart
It’s rare that I want to get up and walk out during a movie. When I reach the point of the story where it doesn’t matter what happens next, there’s probably no redemption in the movie. Green Room is it.
The thriller/horror movie is about a young Punk Rock band who’s living a rough life on the road. After playing a gig that went downhill before their arrival, they get invited to play another, better paying show. On the way out the door from playing, one member accidentally witnesses something they shouldn’t have and the band is suddenly thrown into captivity and trying to figure a way out.
I will say that technically, there’s some solid visuals here. Beautifully shot and edited, I had absolutely no issues with the cinematography.
I ‘personally’ don’t want to watch a movie firmly set in a racist, hateful version of the punk rock scene, but I’m willing to give it a chance if there’s interesting characters and they can manage to make a compelling story with the material (i.e. Shane Meadows’ This Is England).
There’s something to say about the really gory effects on display here, but like any special effects laden blockbuster, if you don’t care about the characters or the situation they’re in, it’s pointless. The characters were somewhat interesting, but not compelling. The situation was kind of unique, but not even close to being original enough to be engrossing. The story kind of tries to be a little campy so at least the audience can have fun with some of the ridiculousness, but those moments are very few.
So I’m stuck watching a movie with a weak story, where the only characters that I’m supposed to care about are getting killed off in true horror movie fashion, set in place completely littered with White Power memorabilia in almost every frame.
I stayed to the deflated ending although I really wanted to leave well before. I was grateful for the short runtime though.
