Chances are you might not get to see this Anime on the big screen because it was a very limited screening, but I still wanted to review it.
This is the feature length story that’s set years after the hit Anime series. Now, I didn’t think that I had seen or heard of this show before, but I may have watched the first couple of episodes, because the fancy high tech guns they used here looked very familiar. My goal was to see if I could still enjoy this sequel without ever watching the original TV show? Turns out, I could.
Although I didn’t really understand how the universe was set up or how the characters related to each other, the story starts off like a police procedural with a young female officer (Akane Tsunemori) leading her team to stop a group of foreigners from buying weapons. Upon investigation, she discovers that there is a connection between these “want to be” terrorist and a former coworker of hers (Shinya Kogami). She’s sent out on the mission to apprehend this person from her past, and uncover the mystery of this foreign land.
What follows is a twisty, action packed adventure that is just as politically intricate as it is expansive and violent. Even though this movie isn’t designed for newcomers, it does a good job letting you know what the particular characters’ roles are in this universe rather quickly so it’s easier to focus on the story. I imagine that this is what the original Anime is like, only spread out over 22 minute chunks. I will definitely be going back to check out the show because these characters are so interesting.
Beautiful visuals, great action sequences, gory violence, intelligent lead characters, really sick villains, and an easy to follow yet multi-layered storyline brings me to definitely recommend this film even if you’re not familiar with the original property. If you are, then you will most likely enjoy it even more.
