Underworld : Blood Wars
Director:
Anna Foerster
Cast:
Kate Beckinsale, Theo James
The world of the Vampires v. Werewolves have returned in another leather clad, blueish hued adventure. This movie picks up where the last one left off. The only problem there, is that I have no idea what happened in the last film. Luckily there’s a recap of all the earlier Underworld films so at least I can be refreshed regarding how this universe is set up. Kate Beckinsale’s hero character Selene has been exiled from her vampire clan, and is now being hunted by the Lycans. Selene is offered a chance to rejoin the vampires in order to train the newer young warriors for the upcoming inevitable Lycan war.
Once Selene is back within the confines of her people, she unknowingly steps into a carefully orchestrated web of deception that involves her blood, and also the blood of her hidden daughter.
I will admit that this story is much better than the last movie (partially because at least I can remember this one) but it still does suffer from some pretty cheesy looking CGI and some questionable choices during the fight sequences. I did enjoy the incredibly blatant “Lord of the Rings” rip offs, and the fact that there was twists and turns to the story, especially the ones concerning the villain. I was also a fan of the superhero tropes used for Selene story as she goes about getting some revenge and redemption.
Not a great, or even good movie, but an okay chapter in the franchise. I would think this would be a good place for them to stop making these films, but something tells me there will be more to this story.
