It’s Friday! Time for another countdown in the world of nerd with The Friday Five!
This week, we continue our march toward the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens with the top 5 best songs about Star Wars!!!
Please be advised, this is a list of songs ABOUT Star Wars. If we were trying to rank musical pieces by John Williams, I think my head would explode.
5) Star Wars Gangster Rap
It’s an older meme, but it checks out sir. Nearly ten years ago this video appeared on the interwebs marrying a hilarious and catchy song with an animated video and took the digital world by storm. I would caution against watching this, as I spent the last 24 hours quietly rapping to myself about cutting off Luke’s hand.
4) Star Wars and other Galactic Funk – Meco
Disco? Yes, Star Wars was released in 1977 and therefore had to have its own disco song. Joining such legendary musicians as Queen and KISS in the world of disco, we get John Williams classic score from A New Hope with sick bass and generic laser blasts. Imagine a world where coked up people in extremely tight clothing just couldn’t stop shaking it to this.
3) Fett’s Vette – MC Chris
Nerdcore Rapper MC Chris’ ode to the ultimate hero of Star Wars geeks everywhere, Boba Fett! Hot off his role as MC Pee Pants on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, MC Chris dropped this amazing song all about the life of our favorite bounty hunter. As someone who usually believes that you can’t spell crap without rap, it is very odd to have two rap songs on this list, but there was no way this was not making it. Another song you will be signing for days!
2) The Saga Begins – Weird Al Yankovic
What can be said about Weird Al that hasn’t been said already? The man is an absolute legend. In 1999, he took American Pie and merged it with Star Wars to create this masterpiece. After listening to it, you would never know that he had no access to the script at all and wrote this based on internet leaks. Considering the state of the internet in 1999, this is a hell of an accomplishment. It’s catchy and funny and about Star Wars, but it’s can’t be number one because it’s about a prequel movie, sorry. The piano playing Darth Sidious kills me in the video every time I see it.
1) Yoda – Weird Al Yankovic
Well. We’ve already established that Weird Al is amazing. Now merge that with the song Lola and the greatest movie ever made, The Empire Strikes Back, and we have THE NUMBER ONE BEST SONG ABOUT STAR WARS! There’s not much to say other than listen to this and then sing it for the next month.
