Director
Sharon Maguire

Cast
Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey

Empire Records own Renée Zellweger is back as our favorite wacky British heroine, returning to the big screen after 12 years. Bridget Jones continues to be the sad, hopeless, unlucky single girl that we’ve gotten to know and love, although I could’ve sworn those other movies had happy endings for her.

This time she finds herself in a “soap opera” type of predicament where she meets, and decides to have a one night stand, with a dashing American, played by Patrick Dempsey, but then has a reunion the next week with her old love, played by Colin Firth. She soon realizes that she’s pregnant and she’s not sure who the father is.

Aside from some pacing issues, this movie delivers exactly what it promises, a wacky, silly, romantic comedy. If you’re a fan of the other Bridget Jones movies, this is a very comfortable welcome back. Although it’s still kind of baffling how someone like her can make all these ridiculous social and professional mistakes, and still manages to keep a high paying and established job. I guess it’s just some of the things that have to be added there to make this a comedy.

There’s some really funny lines here, mostly from Colin Firth, and some sweet scenes too. It does take a little while before the story becomes engrossing, but thanks to some nice performances by all the leads, it’s definitely a fulfilling journey by the end of it. Also, another great selection of music for the soundtrack, particularly “F*** You” by Lily Allen.

Ladies: a good romantic comedy for you, especially if you’re a fan of the first two features. Guys:…maybe you want to see what else is playing nearby, unless you’re also a fan of the first two.

I can’t believe there’s a “Bridget Jones Trilogy”

Grade: 3.5 out of 5
