THE FRIDAY FIVE: AWESOMEST SONGS FROM MOVIES

Friday Five
Friday Five

This week’s Friday Five are the Awesomest Songs from Movies!

Of course, when I sat down to make this list I realized there were way more than five awesome songs. It was closer to five HUNDRED. I tried limiting it to genre films only and it was still a lot of songs. So, unlike other lists, this isn’t my definitive list that is 100% correct and your ideas are wrong. This is literally the first five awesome songs from movies that popped into my head. With that all out of the way, let’s rock and/or roll!!!

5) The Touch by Stan Bush from Transformers: The Movie
In 1986, unlike today, a Transformers movie wasn’t a reason to stay home from the theaters, it was a reason to get hyped over an amazeballs animated movie bringing all new characters and storylines to the animated cartoon. What better way to help the powerful moment of triumph in the film than with this song by Stan Bush, filled with powerful guitar and synthesizer riffs. This classic has been heard over and over throughout the years in places like Boogie Nights and Regular Show. If you aren’t pumped up and ready to fight giant robots that eat planets voiced by Orsen Wells after hearing this, you may be dead.

4) You Could Be Mine by Guns N’ Roses from Terminator 2: Judgement Day

You would be hard pressed to find a better paring of ass kickers than Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator and Guns N’ Roses. Terminator 2 (like its prequel) is an action/scifi masterpiece and this song announces its arrival like a giant explosion of awesome. This was released as a single before the release of the Use Your Illusion double album to a fandom rabid for anything from GnR. It has a great music video with Arnold himself in it as the Terminator, who decides that the band is a waste of ammo. This song is so synomins with the good days of the Terminator franchise that the god awful Terminator: Salvation featured it as well, desperately trying to look cool and bad ass…failing miserably.

3) Dream Warriors by Dokken from Nightmare on Elm St 3: Dream Warriors

I knew there would be a song on here about Freddy, the villain/hero of the Nightmare on Elm St series. It was a tough choice between this, “Are You Ready for Freddy” by the Fat Boys and “Nightmare on My Street” from DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, but Dokken had to win. This absolute classic glam rock anthem from the best Nightmare movie not only rocks, it has a hilarious and freaking classic music video. Freddy is terrorizing a teen in her dreams, but thankfully Dokken is there to save her with the power of butt rock riffs and falsetto singing. Their music makes Freddy wake up terrified of his dream of being in a Dokken video.

2) The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News from Back to the Future

Huey Lewis and the News rule. Not in an ironic “Oh I’m so edgy, I watch American Psycho every day!” way. They just rule. A legendary rock band from the 80’s with tons of hit songs, they bring their greatest song ever to one of the greatest movies of all time, Back to the Future. There really isn’t much else to say about this. The song is 80’s in your face with synth, sax and mullets and the movie is the best. All you can is watch the video and wish you had a DeLorean.

1) Princes of the Universe by Queen from Highlander

Queen is one of my favorite bands of all time. Queen is one of the greatest bands of all time. Queen singing the theme song of an 80’s sci fi movie about immortals who fight with swords trying to cut each other’s heads off is THE greatest song from a movie ever. End of argument. Highlander, before spawning 5 sequels that will make you envious of the blind, was a cult classic film full of sword fights, time travel, and Sean Connery chewing enough scenery to make him never have to eat again. Enter Queen who melt your face off with an absolute masterpiece of a song. The music video also features the movies star Christopher Lambert and THE greatest singer of all time Freddie Mercury fighting sword vs microphone stand. Queen contributed many songs to the soundtrack for Highlander, including the ballad “Who Wants to Live Forever”. That song is also amazing and was sung very seriously on American Idol for years with no one seeming to know it was THE LOVE THEME FROM HIGHLANDER. As great as that song is, there is nothing from a movie that will ever be as awesome as this, the number one most awesome song from a movie ever:
